That episode, and the particular scene in which dogs are killed, is purely devastating for fans. When they still couldn¡¯t get over it, the creator of Chernobyl, Craig Mazin, said that the dog death scene in the show was mellowed down version of what actually happened in reality.
I know that was hard. Just so there¡¯s no confusion¡ª the story of the liquidators is real. It happened. And we actually toned it down from the full story.

Yes, 30 years on, people are still trying to help the poor animals. People who visit the area have been warned to not pet these animals because of the fear that they have radioactive contamination.
But still, there is a non-profit organisation called The Clean Futures Fund (CFF), which is helping the stray dogs find homes.
The dogs are being treated for radiation poisoning. They are also being given vaccination for rabies and being sprayed and neutered, according to a unilad.co.uk report. The survivors can be adopted.
